Playing In Middle Position

Poker Codes Online

Unfortunately, middle position does not have the advantages of late position of being able to act last, but at least is doesn't have the disadvantage of confining you to being one of the first to act on each betting round. However, just because middle position is less dangerous than early position, it does not mean that you do not need sound strategy to be able to play your hands profitably from these seats. So be sure to utilize good Texas Hold'em poker strategy to avoid leaking away any chips.

Although you are not going to be able to see every player's actions before the flop when the action reaches you, you will still have the opportunity to gather information from the players' actions in early position.

If there have been no raises before the action gets to you, it puts you in pretty decent shape as there is a reduced risk that a player at the table holds a monster hand. This does not mean that you should be going to town with any old hand though, as you should just use this information to help you feel more comfortable with playing strong holdings like AJ, AQ, TT and better.

If there has been a raise before you, then it is time to reconsider the strength of your hand if you originally intended to see a flop. Players in early position will only raise if they have a very strong hand, as they know that they are going to be handicapped by the fact that they will have to act first on each round. So unless you have a big pocket pair or AK, I would be more inclined to fold my hand unless I had good reason to call due to a read on the player.

If there have been no raises before the action reaches me in early position, I am always going to be raising with my strong hands regardless of whether or not there have been limpers. In fact, the more limpers there have been before me, the more I am going to raise to try and force them out of the pot. There is no reason to fear players that limp from early position, as it is far more likely that they are just trying to see a cheap flop than trying to slowplay a monster, so just raise them out.

The best outcome of a raise from middle position is to force the players in late position to fold, and only have players from the blinds or early position call your raise. This is because if the players in late position fold, it means that we are now the last to act in the hand, which puts us in a very commanding position. Therefore, even though there is a subtle difference, I much prefer raising from late-mid position than I do from early-mid position. The later my position at the table, the greater chance I stand of being one of the last to act.

If you find yourself getting reraised from a player in late position, I would strongly advise that you fold unless you have a strong hand to fight with. This reraise puts you in a tricky spot where you will be putting more money into the pot where you will be the first to act in the hand. As you can guess, this is rarely going to be a profitable position to play from, so be prepared to fold unless you have a hand that you can fight back with. However, if the reraise comes from the blinds, you do not necessarily have to have a super strong hand, as you will remain as the last player to act in the hand.
